Skills

  1. Given that \(x=\log_{10}a\), \(y=\log_{10}b\) and \(z=\log_{10}c\), write in terms of x, y and z:

    1. (a) \(\log_{10}(a^3b)\)

      • \(\log_{10}(a^3b)=\log_{10}a^3+\log_{10}b\)
      • \(=3x+y\)
    2. (b) \(\log_{10}\!\left(\dfrac{b^2}{ac^4}\right)\)

      • \(\log_{10}\dfrac{b^2}{ac^4}=2\log_{10}b-\log_{10}a-4\log_{10}c\)
      • \(=2y-x-4z\)
    3. (c) \(\log_{10}\!\left(\dfrac{1000\sqrt b}{a^2}\right)\)

      • \(\log_{10}1000=3\) and \(\log_{10}\sqrt b=\tfrac12y\)
      • \(\log_{10}\dfrac{1000\sqrt b}{a^2}=3+\tfrac12y-2x\)
  2. Write each expression as a single logarithm.

    1. (a) \(4\ln a+2\ln b\)

      • \(4\ln a=\ln a^4\) and \(2\ln b=\ln b^2\)
      • \(\ln a^4+\ln b^2=\ln(a^4b^2)\)
    2. (b) \(\tfrac12\ln x-3\ln y\)

      • \(\tfrac12\ln x=\ln\sqrt x\) and \(3\ln y=\ln y^3\)
      • \(\ln\sqrt x-\ln y^3=\ln\dfrac{\sqrt x}{y^3}\)
    3. (c) \(\ln12-\ln4+2\ln3\)

      • \(\ln12-\ln4=\ln3\) and \(2\ln3=\ln9\)
      • \(\ln3+\ln9=\ln27\)
  3. Solve each equation.

    1. (a) \(\log_{10}(x+5)=2\)

      • \(x+5=10^2=100\)
      • x = 95
    2. (b) \(\log_{10}(3x-2)=1\)

      • \(3x-2=10^1=10\)
      • 3x = 12, so x = 4
    3. (c) \(\ln(x-1)=2\)

      • \(x-1=e^2\)
      • x = 1 + e² = 8.39
  4. Use logarithms to solve each equation. Give x to 3 significant figures.

    1. (a) \(7^x=30\)

      • \(x\ln7=\ln30\)
      • x = ln 30 / ln 7 = 1.75
    2. (b) \(3\times5^x+4=50\)

      • \(3\times5^x=46\), so \(5^x=\dfrac{46}{3}\)
      • \(x\ln5=\ln\dfrac{46}{3}\)
      • x = 1.70
    3. (c) \(2.5\times1.07^x=40\)

      • \(1.07^x=\dfrac{40}{2.5}=16\)
      • \(x\ln1.07=\ln16\)
      • x = 41.0
  5. Find the exact value of each logarithm.

    1. (a) \(\log_{10}\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{1000}}\)

      • \(\dfrac1{\sqrt{1000}}=10^{-3/2}\)
      • \(\log_{10}10^{-3/2}=-\tfrac32\)
    2. (b) \(\log_{10}\sqrt[3]{100}\)

      • \(\sqrt[3]{100}=10^{2/3}\)
      • \(\log_{10}10^{2/3}=\tfrac23\)
    3. (c) \(\ln\!\left(e^{2}\sqrt{e}\right)\)

      • \(e^2\sqrt e=e^{2}\times e^{1/2}=e^{5/2}\)
      • \(\ln e^{5/2}=\tfrac52\)
  6. Solve each equation for x, where \(x>0\) and \(x\ne1\).

    1. (a) \(\log_{x}81=4\)

      • \(x^4=81\)
      • \(x=81^{1/4}=3\)
    2. (b) \(\log_{x}49=-2\)

      • \(x^{-2}=49\)
      • \(x^2=\tfrac1{49}\), so \(x=\tfrac17\)
    3. (c) \(\log_{x}8=\tfrac32\)

      • \(x^{3/2}=8\)
      • \(x=8^{2/3}=(2^3)^{2/3}=4\)
  7. Solve each equation by writing both sides as powers of the same base.

    1. (a) \(4^{2x-1}=32^{x+2}\)

      • \(4^{2x-1}=2^{4x-2}\) and \(32^{x+2}=2^{5x+10}\)
      • 4x − 2 = 5x + 10
      • x = −12
    2. (b) \(27^{x+1}=9^{2x-3}\)

      • \(27^{x+1}=3^{3x+3}\) and \(9^{2x-3}=3^{4x-6}\)
      • 3x + 3 = 4x − 6
      • x = 9
    3. (c) \(3^{2x-1}=\dfrac1{81}\)

      • \(\tfrac1{81}=3^{-4}\)
      • 2x − 1 = −4
      • \(x=-\tfrac32\)
  8. Solve \(2^{3x-1}=5^{x+2}\), giving x in the form \(\dfrac{\ln p}{\ln q}\). Then give x to 3 significant figures.

    • \((3x-1)\ln2=(x+2)\ln5\)
    • \(3x\ln2-\ln2=x\ln5+2\ln5\)
    • \(x(3\ln2-\ln5)=2\ln5+\ln2=\ln50\)
    • \(3\ln2-\ln5=\ln\tfrac85\), so \(x=\dfrac{\ln50}{\ln1.6}\)=8.32
  9. Solve each equation.

    1. (a) \(\log_{10}(4x) = 2\)

      • \(4x = 10^2 = 100\)
      • x = 25
    2. (b) \(\log_{10}(x-7) = -1\)

      • \(x - 7 = 10^{-1} = 0.1\)
      • x = 7.1
    3. (c) \(\ln(3x-2) = 2.5\)

      • \(3x - 2 = e^{2.5}\)
      • \(x = \frac{e^{2.5} + 2}{3} = 4.73\)
  10. Solve each equation by writing both sides as powers of the same base.

    1. (a) \(5^{x-2} = 125\)

      • \(125 = 5^3\), so \(x - 2 = 3\)
      • x = 5
    2. (b) \(9^{x} = 27\)

      • \(9 = 3^2\) and \(27 = 3^3\), so \(3^{2x} = 3^3\)
      • \(2x = 3\), so \(x = \frac{3}{2}\)
    3. (c) \(2^{3x+1} = 16^{x-3}\)

      • \(16 = 2^4\), so \(16^{x-3} = 2^{4(x-3)}\)
      • \(3x + 1 = 4x - 12\)
      • x = 13
