X and Y are independent, \(X\sim N(34,\,11)\) and \(Y\sim N(21,\,6)\). \(X_1,X_2\) are independent observations of X and \(Y_1,Y_2,Y_3\) are independent observations of Y. State the distribution of each.
(a) \(W=5X-2Y+3\)
- Mean: \(E(W)\) = 5 × 34 − 2 × 21 + 3 = 131
- Variance: \(Var(W)\) = 5² × 11 + (−2)² × 6 = 299
(b) \(W=X_1-X_2\)
- Mean: 34 − 34 = 0
- Variance: 1² × 11 + (−1)² × 11 = 22
(c) \(W=Y_1+Y_2+Y_3\)
- Mean: 3 × 21 = 63
- Variance: 3 × 6 = 18 (three observations, not 3²)

The mass of an item is a normal variable. Samples of independent items are taken and \(\bar X\) is the sample mean.
(a) The mass has distribution \(N(75,\,18)\). State the distribution of \(\bar X\) for a sample of 6 items.
- \(Var(\bar{X})\) = 18 ÷ 6 = 3
(b) A second item has mass with mean 2.4 and standard deviation 0.5. Find the mean and the variance of the average mass of a batch of 10 such items.
- Variance of one item = 0.5² = 0.25
- Variance of the average = 0.25 ÷ 10 = 0.025
-
A random variable X has mean 45 and standard deviation 9. The distribution of X is not known. Give the approximate distribution of each quantity, or say that it cannot be found.
(a) \(\bar X\) for a sample of 60 observations
- n = 60 > 30, so the central limit theorem applies
- Variance = 9² ÷ 60 = 81 ÷ 60 = 1.35
(b) \(\bar X\) for a sample of 12 observations
- n = 12 is not more than 30 and X is not known to be normal
(c) \(\sum_{i=1}^{40} X_i\)
- n = 40 > 30, so the central limit theorem applies
- Mean = 40 × 45 = 1800; variance = 40 × 9² = 3240

- \(X\sim N(800,\,25^2)\)
- From the calculator: \(P(X<760)\) = 0.0548 (normal cdf with μ = 800, σ = √625 = 25)
In context
-
A courier van collects parcels. The mass of a parcel, in kg, is normally distributed with mean 18.4 and variance 5.2. The mass of its packaging, in kg, is normally distributed with mean 1.3 and variance 0.16. The two masses are independent.
(a) State the distribution of the total mass T and find any parameters.
- Mean = 18.4 + 1.3 = 19.7
- Variance = 5.2 + 0.16 = 5.36
(b) Find the probability that the total mass is more than 22 kg.
- From the calculator: \(P(T>22)\) = 0.160 (normal cdf with μ = 19.7, σ = √5.36 = 2.32…)

Maya's time to solve a puzzle, A minutes, is normally distributed with mean 6.4 and variance 1.21. Noor's time, B minutes, is normally distributed with mean 7.1 and variance 0.81. The times are independent.
(a) Find the mean and the standard deviation of D = A − B.
- Mean = 6.4 − 7.1 = −0.7
- Variance = 1.21 + 0.81 = 2.02
- Standard deviation = √2.02 = 1.42…
(b) Find the probability that A is less than B.
- A < B means D < 0
- From the calculator: \(P(D<0)\) = 0.689 (normal cdf with μ = −0.7, σ = √2.02 = 1.42…)
(c) Find the probability that A is less than B by more than 2.
- A is less than B by more than 2 means D < −2
- From the calculator: \(P(D<-2)\) = 0.180 (normal cdf with μ = −0.7, σ = √2.02 = 1.42…)

The length of a rope, X metres, is normally distributed with mean 3.1 and variance 0.09. The length of a chain, Y metres, is normally distributed with mean 1.4 and variance 0.04. Ropes and chains are chosen independently.
(a) Find the probability that a randomly chosen rope is more than twice as long as a randomly chosen chain.
- X > 2Y means X − 2Y > 0
- Mean = 3.1 − 2 × 1.4 = 0.3
- Variance = 1² × 0.09 + (−2)² × 0.04 = 0.25
- From the calculator: \(P(X-2Y>0)\) = 0.726 (normal cdf with μ = 0.3, σ = √0.25 = 0.5)
(b) Find the probability that the total length of 2 randomly chosen ropes and 3 randomly chosen chains is more than 10.5 metres.
- Total = 2 observations of X and 3 of Y
- Mean = 2 × 3.1 + 3 × 1.4 = 10.4
- Variance = 2 × 0.09 + 3 × 0.04 = 0.3

- \(S\approx N(60\times 0.42,\,60\times 0.05^2)\) = \(N(25.2,\,0.15)\)
- From the calculator: \(P(S<25)\) = 0.303 (normal cdf with μ = 25.2, σ = √0.15 = 0.387…)
