Parabolic Motion

Functions & Equations

Parabolic motion is the description of an object moving under the influence of gravity.

Where this idea comes from

Start here β€” this is the source that inspired this exploration.

Introduction

Throw a ball in the air and use the iPhysics app or Logger Pro (or similar) to track the motion. Use a basketball and compare it to a table tennis ball. Does it fit as expected?

Guiding Questions
  • What quadratic model describes the path of a thrown ball, and what do its coefficients mean physically?
  • Film or photograph a projectile and fit a parabola to its path. How good is the fit?
  • How do launch angle and speed change the range and maximum height? Find the angle that maximises range.
  • Where does the simple model break down β€” for example with air resistance or spin?
