\(a^m \times a^n = a^{m+n}\)\(2^3 \times 2^4 = 2^{3+4} = 2^7\)
\(a^m \div a^n = a^{m-n}\)\(3^5 \div 3^2 = 3^{5-2} = 3^3\)

Board · L02 · Can we verify or prove this rule?
Can we verify or prove this rule?

Raising a number to the power \(\frac{1}{2}\) is the same as finding its square root.

We know that: \(\sqrt{a} \times \sqrt{a} = a\).

We also know that: \(a^{1/2} \times a^{1/2} = a^{\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}} = a^1 = a\).

Since \(\sqrt{a} \times \sqrt{a} = a\) and \(a^{1/2} \times a^{1/2} = a\), \(\Rightarrow \sqrt{a} \equiv a^{1/2}\).

Example

Prove that \(a^{1/3} = \sqrt[3]{a}\) in the same way.

  • \(\sqrt[3]{a} \times \sqrt[3]{a} \times \sqrt[3]{a} = a\) and \(a^{1/3} \times a^{1/3} \times a^{1/3} = a^1 = a\), so \(\sqrt[3]{a} \equiv a^{1/3}\)
