Translations of graphs

Target: I can sketch y = f(x) + b by moving every point up or down by b. (+3 more)

By the end of this section

Key points

Vertical translations

  • y = f(x) + b moves the graph up by b. If b is negative, it moves down.
  • The change is outside the bracket, so it changes the outputs (the y-values). The x-values stay the same.
  • To sketch it, move each marked point up or down by b and join them in the same shape.

Horizontal translations

  • y = f(x + c) moves the graph c units to the left. It is a translation by −c.
  • y = f(x − 2) moves the graph 2 units to the right. The direction is the opposite of the sign.
  • The change is inside the bracket, so it changes the inputs (the x-values). The y-values stay the same.
  • The graph moves the opposite way to what you expect, because f(x + c) reaches a given y-value c units sooner.

Equations after a translation

  • To translate right by h, replace every x by (x − h). To translate left by h, replace x by (x + h).
  • For a vertical shift, add or subtract on the end: 2x³ down 5 is 2x³ − 5.
  • Expand and simplify when the question asks for the form ax² + bx + c. Expand (x + c)² as x² + 2cx + c².
  • Do the horizontal shift first, then add the vertical shift.

Explore: transformations of a graph

The dashed graph is y = f(x). The orange graph is y = p f(qx + c) + b. Drag the first orange point to translate the graph, or choose a kind of change and move the sliders. Say what happens to the labelled points before you read the answer.

Move a slider to change the graph.

  1. Choose Translation and drag A′ 3 units to the left. What is c now? Why is that the opposite of what the plus sign suggests?
  2. Choose Stretch and set q = 2. Is the graph twice as wide or half as wide? Then choose Reflection and tick the y-axis box. Which coordinate of each labelled point changes sign?
  3. Choose All and set c = 2 and q = 2. Read the order in the sentence. Does the graph move 2 units, or a different amount? Why?
  4. Choose 1/x or eˣ and translate the graph. Where does each asymptote go? Which numbers move the vertical one, and which the horizontal one?

Worked examples

Problems like the ones in class. Pick one, try it, then open the working.
A vertical translation

The graph of \(y=f(x)\) is a downward parabola with its maximum at \((2, 5)\) and y-intercept 1, as shown. Sketch \(y=f(x)-3\) and give its maximum point and y-intercept.

−2−1123456−8−6−4−2246xyy = f(x)
Working
  1. Outside the bracket

    \(y=f(x)-3\)

3 is taken from every output. The graph moves down 3. Nothing happens to x.

  2. Move the points

    \((2, 5)\to(2, 2)\) \((0, 1)\to(0, -2)\)

Keep each x-value. Take 3 from each y-value.

  3. −2−1123456−8−6−4−2246xyy = f(x)y = f(x) − 3
    Sketch

    Maximum (2, 2), y-intercept −2, same shape.

The dashed graph is the original moved down 3.

A horizontal translation

The graph of \(y=f(x)\) is made of straight lines through A(−3, −1), B(0, 3), C(3, −2) and D(5, 1). Sketch \(y=f(x+2)\). Give the image of C.

−55−4−2246xyABCD
Working
  1. Inside the bracket

    \(y=f(x+2)\)

The change is with x, so it acts on the x-values, and it works backwards: +2 moves the graph 2 units left.

  2. Move the points

    Take 2 from each x-value: A'(−5, −1), B'(−2, 3), C'(1, −2), D'(3, 1)

    Keep every y-value.

  3. −55−4−2246xyABCDA'B'C'D'
    Sketch

    C' is (1, −2).

The dashed graph is the original moved 2 left.

Translate a quadratic and expand

The graph of \(y=x^2-5x+2\) is translated 3 units to the left. Write the new equation in the form \(y=ax^2+bx+c\).

Working
  1. Left 3 means x + 3

    \(y=f(x+3)=(x+3)^2-5(x+3)+2\)

    Replace every x by (x + 3).

  2. Expand

    \(y=x^2+6x+9-5x-15+2\)

    Expand (x + 3)² and −5(x + 3) separately.

  3. Collect

    \(y=x^{2} + x - 4\)

    Collect like terms.

Translating a power function

The graph of \(y=2x^3\) is translated 4 units to the right and 5 units down. Write down the new equation, and find y when x = 5.

Working
  1. Right 4

    \(y=2(x-4)^3\)

    Right by 4 means replace x by x − 4.

  2. Down 5

    \(y=2(x-4)^3-5\)

Down 5 means take 5 from the output.

  3. x = 5

    \(y=2(5-4)^3-5=-3\)

    Put in x = 5.
