12.5.1

Function notation, domain and range

Target: I can use function notation such as f(x), V(t) and C(n) to evaluate a function and to solve f(x) = k. (+3 more)

By the end of this section

Key points

Function notation

  • f(x) is the output of the function f for the input x. The letters can change: V(t) is a volume at time t, C(n) is a cost for n items.
  • To evaluate, put the number where the letter is: \(f(3)\) means replace x by 3.
  • \(f(x)=k\) is an equation: the output is given and you find the input. Use the calculator if the equation is hard to rearrange.

Domain and range

  • The domain is the set of inputs allowed. The range is the set of outputs that result.
  • Look for what is not allowed: dividing by zero, the square root of a negative number, the logarithm of zero or a negative number.
  • For a quadratic, find the maximum or minimum with the calculator. The y-coordinate of that point is one end of the range.
  • Write a domain or range as an inequality: \(x\geq2\), \(y<5\), or \(x\neq3\). On a graph, a closed dot gives \(\leq\) and an open dot gives \(<\).

Domain of a model

  • In a model, the domain is limited by the situation: time cannot be negative, a length cannot be zero, a ball stops when it lands.
  • Find where the output becomes impossible (negative height, negative length) and stop there.
  • The range of the model follows from the domain, not from the formula alone.

On the calculator

Reading the domain and range from a graph

  • Graph the function and use a window that shows all of it.
  • Use the minimum and maximum tools to find the lowest and highest outputs.
  • Check the end points of the domain with the table or the trace.

Worked examples

Problems like the ones in class. Pick one, try it, then open the working.
Evaluating in notation

The volume of water in a tank is \(V(t)=480-15t\) litres, where t is the time in minutes after a tap is opened. Find \(V(8)\), and find the value of t for which \(V(t)=105\).

Working
  1. Read the notation

\(V(8)\) means: put \(t=8\) into the formula

V is the name of the function and the number in the bracket is the input.

  2. Evaluate

    \(V(8)=480-15\times8=360\)

After 8 minutes there are 360 litres left.

  3. Work backwards

    \(480-15t=105 \;\Rightarrow\; 15t=375 \;\Rightarrow\; t=25\)

\(V(t)=105\) is an equation: the output is given and you find the input.

Domain and range from a formula

\(f(x)=\sqrt{x-2}+3\). Write down the domain and the range of f.

Working
  1. Domain: what can go in

    \(x-2\geq0 \;\Rightarrow\; x\geq2\)

You cannot take the square root of a negative number.

  2. Range: what comes out

    \(\sqrt{x-2}\geq0\), so \(f(x)\geq3\)

The square root is never negative. Adding 3 lifts the smallest output to 3.

  3. State both

    Domain \(x\geq2\)\; range \(y\geq3\)

    Write each as an inequality.

Range of a quadratic

\(g(x)=-x^2+6x-4\), for all real x. Find the range of g.

Working
  1. Sketch the shape

The coefficient of \(x^2\) is negative, so the graph is a hill with a maximum.

A hill has no lowest point, so the range is bounded above only.

  2. Find the maximum

From the calculator: maximum at \((3,\,5)\)

Graph g and use the maximum tool.

  3. State the range

    \(y\leq5\)

Every output is 5 or less.

Domain and range from a graph

The graph shows \(y=f(x)\). The closed dot at \((-2,\,7)\) is part of the graph. The open dot at \((4,\,7)\) is not. Write down the domain and the range of f.

−3−2−112345−4−22468xyy = f(x)
Working
  1. Domain: left to right

    From \(x=-2\) (included) to \(x=4\) (left out): \(-2\leq x<4\)

A closed dot gives \(\leq\)\; an open dot gives \(<\).

  2. Range: bottom to top

The lowest point is the minimum at \((1,\,-2)\). The highest value is 7, reached at \(x=-2\).

The open dot also sits at 7, but 7 is still reached because the closed dot is on the graph.

  3. State both

    Domain \(-2\leq x<4\)\; range \(-2\leq y\leq7\)

    Range comes from the y-values.

A reasonable domain

A ball is thrown upwards from a height of 1.5 m. Its height after t seconds is \(h(t)=-5t^2+20t+1.5\) metres. State a reasonable domain for the model. Give the end point to 3 significant figures.

Working
  1. Start

Time cannot be negative, and the throw starts at \(t=0\).

The model begins when the ball is thrown.

  2. End

Solve \(h(t)=0\). From the calculator: \(t=4.07\)

The ball stops when it lands. Use the positive solution.

  3. State the domain

    \(0\leq t\leq4.07\)

Outside this interval the height is negative or the ball has not been thrown.
