Definition and arithmetic of matrices

Target: State the order of a matrix (+2 more)

By the end of this section

Key points

What a matrix is

  • A matrix is a rectangular array of numbers or letters, called elements.
  • Its order is rows × columns. A matrix with 2 rows and 3 columns has order 2 × 3. This is a label, not a multiplication.
  • A square matrix has the same number of rows as columns.

Equal, add, subtract

  • Two matrices are equal when they have the same order and every pair of matching elements is equal.
  • Matrices of the same order are added or subtracted element by element. Different orders cannot be added.

Multiplying by a number

  • Multiply every element by the number (the scalar).
  • A rise of 8% across the whole table is the scalar 1.08.

On the calculator

Store a matrix

Template key, then the matrix template · name it with :=

  • Type a := and then the matrix. The colon matters: := stores it.
  • After that, a + b, 3·a and a − b work like numbers.

Worked examples

Problems like the ones in class. Pick one, try it, then open the working.
The order of a matrix

State the order of \(\begin{pmatrix}4 & 0 & -1 \\ 2 & 7 & 3\end{pmatrix}\).

Working
  1. Count rows, then columns

    2 rows, 3 columns

Rows go across. Columns go down.

  2. The order

    2 × 3

Rows first. It is not 6: the order is a label.

Equal matrices

Given that \(\begin{pmatrix}2x-1 & 4 \\ 3 & x+y\end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix}9 & 4 \\ 3 & 2\end{pmatrix}\), find \(x\) and \(y\).

Working
  1. Top left

    \(2x - 1 = 9\), so \(x = 5\)

    Matching elements are equal.

  2. Bottom right

    \(x + y = 2\), so \(y = -3\)

    Use \(x = 5\).

Subtract two matrices

\(A = \begin{pmatrix}4 & -2 \\ 1 & 6 \\ -3 & 0\end{pmatrix}\) and \(B = \begin{pmatrix}-1 & 5 \\ 2 & -4 \\ 7 & 3\end{pmatrix}\). Find \(A - B\).

Working
  1. Same order?

    Both are 3 × 2

    So they can be subtracted.

  2. Element by element

    \(A - B = \begin{pmatrix}4-(-1) & -2-5 \\ 1-2 & 6-(-4) \\ -3-7 & 0-3\end{pmatrix}\)

    Take care subtracting a negative.

  3. Answer

    \(\begin{pmatrix}5 & -7 \\ -1 & 10 \\ -10 & -3\end{pmatrix}\)

    On the calculator: a − b.

A rise across the whole table

A gym's monthly income, in euros, from adult and student members at its two sites is \(\begin{pmatrix}2400 & 1500 \\ 1800 & 2100\end{pmatrix}\). Income is expected to rise by 5% everywhere. Find the matrix of expected income.

Working
  1. The scalar

    \(1.05\)

    A 5% rise multiplies by 1.05.

  2. Multiply every element

    \(1.05\begin{pmatrix}2400 & 1500 \\ 1800 & 2100\end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix}2520 & 1575 \\ 1890 & 2205\end{pmatrix}\)

Every element changes by the same factor.

Combine the two

\(A = \begin{pmatrix}3 & -1 \\ 0 & 4\end{pmatrix}\) and \(B = \begin{pmatrix}1 & 2 \\ -2 & 5\end{pmatrix}\). Find \(2A - 3B\).

Working
  1. Multiply each by its scalar

    \(2A = \begin{pmatrix}6 & -2 \\ 0 & 8\end{pmatrix},\quad 3B = \begin{pmatrix}3 & 6 \\ -6 & 15\end{pmatrix}\)

    Scalars first.

  2. Subtract

    \(2A - 3B = \begin{pmatrix}3 & -8 \\ 6 & -7\end{pmatrix}\)

    \(0 - (-6) = 6\).
