Determinants

Target: Find the determinant of a 2 × 2 matrix by hand, and of larger matrices on the calculator (+2 more)

By the end of this section

Key points

The determinant

  • Every square matrix has a determinant: one number worked out from its elements. It can be positive, negative or zero.
  • For \(M = \begin{pmatrix}a & b \\ c & d\end{pmatrix}\), \(\det M = ad - bc\).
  • Written \(\det M\) or \(|M|\). Larger matrices: use the calculator.

What it measures

  • Take the columns of a 2 × 2 matrix as two vectors from the origin. The determinant is the area of the parallelogram they make, with a sign.
  • Positive when the second vector is anticlockwise from the first. Negative when it is clockwise.
  • Zero when the two vectors lie along the same line: the parallelogram has collapsed.

Area of a triangle

  • Triangle \(OAB\) is half the parallelogram: \(\text{area} = \frac{1}{2}|\det|\).
  • For any triangle \(PQR\), use the vectors \(\overrightarrow{PQ}\) and \(\overrightarrow{PR}\) as the columns.

On the calculator

Determinant

Menu > Matrix & Vector > Determinant · det(a)

  • Works for any square matrix.

Explore: the determinant as an area

Drag A and B. The columns of the matrix are the position vectors of A and B. Say what the determinant will be before you read it.

Select a point (Tab) and use the arrow keys to move it.

  1. When is the determinant's value negative?
  2. When is the determinant's value 0?
  3. Keep the lengths of OA and OB the same. Where must B be for the determinant to be as large as possible?
  4. How can we use this to find the area of a triangle?

Worked examples

Problems like the ones in class. Pick one, try it, then open the working.
A determinant by hand

Find the determinant of \(\begin{pmatrix}4 & -3 \\ 2 & 5\end{pmatrix}\).

Working
  1. ad − bc

    \(4(5) - (-3)(2)\)

Leading diagonal first, then subtract the other diagonal.

  2. Answer

    \(20 - (-6) = 26\)

    Subtracting a negative adds.

A negative determinant

Find the determinant of \(\begin{pmatrix}1 & 6 \\ 3 & 2\end{pmatrix}\), and say what its sign tells you.

Working
  1. ad − bc

    \(1(2) - 6(3) = -16\)

Leading diagonal, less the other diagonal.

  2. The sign

    Negative

The second column, \(\begin{pmatrix}6 \\ 2\end{pmatrix}\), is clockwise from the first, \(\begin{pmatrix}1 \\ 3\end{pmatrix}\). The area is 16.

Video walkthrough coming
When is the determinant zero?

Find the values of \(k\) for which \(\begin{pmatrix}k & 6 \\ 2 & k-1\end{pmatrix}\) has determinant zero.

Working
  1. Set ad − bc = 0

    \(k(k - 1) - 12 = 0\)

The leading diagonal is \(k(k-1)\). The other is \(6 \times 2\).

  2. Solve

    \(k^2 - k - 12 = 0\), so \((k - 4)(k + 3) = 0\)

By factorising, or on the calculator.

  3. Answer

    \(k = 4\) or \(k = -3\)

For these values the two columns lie along the same line.

Area of a triangle from the origin

Find the area of triangle \(OAB\) where \(A\) is \((5, 2)\) and \(B\) is \((1, 4)\).

Working
  1. Columns

    \(\begin{pmatrix}5 & 1 \\ 2 & 4\end{pmatrix}\)

The position vectors of \(A\) and \(B\).

  2. Determinant

    \(5(4) - 1(2) = 18\)

    The parallelogram has area 18.

  3. Halve it

    \(\frac{1}{2}(18) = 9\)

The triangle is half the parallelogram.

Area of any triangle

Find the area of the triangle with vertices \(P(1, 1)\), \(Q(6, 3)\) and \(R(2, 7)\).

Working
  1. Two sides as vectors

    \(\overrightarrow{PQ} = \begin{pmatrix}5 \\ 2\end{pmatrix}\), \(\overrightarrow{PR} = \begin{pmatrix}1 \\ 6\end{pmatrix}\)

    Both start at \(P\).

  2. Determinant

    \(5(6) - 1(2) = 28\)

The two vectors are the columns.

  3. Halve it

    \(\frac{1}{2}|28| = 14\)

Take the size: an area is never negative.

A 3 × 3 determinant

Find the determinant of \(\begin{pmatrix}1 & 2 & 0 \\ 3 & -1 & 4 \\ 2 & 0 & 5\end{pmatrix}\).

Working
  1. Store the matrix

    a := the 3 × 3 matrix

    Use the matrix template.

  2. Determinant

    det(a) = −19

You do not need to do a 3 × 3 determinant by hand.
