Voronoi diagrams in the real world

Target: I can say what a Voronoi diagram shows: sites, and a cell around each site. (+3 more)

By the end of this section

Key points

What a Voronoi diagram shows

  • A Voronoi diagram splits a region into cells. Each cell belongs to one site.
  • The sites are the given points: clinics, fire stations, phone masts, weather stations, cafés.
  • Every point in a site's cell is closer to that site than to any other site.
  • A point on the boundary between two cells is the same distance from both sites.

Using the model

  • To find the nearest site to a point, work out the distance to every site and pick the smallest. The point lies in that site's cell.
  • Distance means straight-line distance. Roads, rivers and hills are not in the model.
  • Real uses: the area served by each fire station or clinic, the area each phone mast covers, which weather station to use for a farm, and in football which player can reach a point first.

Describing a situation

  • Say what the sites are and what a cell means in the situation.
  • Say one question the diagram answers, such as "Which clinic is nearest to this house?".
  • Say one thing the model leaves out, such as the route by road or the size of each site.

Explore: build a Voronoi diagram

Drag the sites, add one or take one away, and watch the cells change. Drag the orange point P to see which site is nearest to it.

Drag a site or the point P.

  1. Drag P across an edge. What happens to the nearest site? What is true about the two distances when P is on the edge?
  2. Tick the vertices and press one. How many sites are the same distance from it? What does the dashed circle show?
  3. Add a site close to the middle of the diagram. Which cells get smaller, and which cells do not change at all?
  4. Move two sites so that they are very close together. Where is the edge between them? Why is it so short or so long?

Worked examples

Problems like the ones in class. Pick one, try it, then open the working.
Which clinic is nearest?

Four clinics are at \(A(2, 3)\), \(B(9, 3)\), \(C(5, 9)\), \(D(11, 10)\), where the units are kilometres. The Voronoi diagram is drawn, with three homes P, Q and R. Each home goes to the nearest clinic. How many of the homes go to clinic B?

2468101224681012xyABCDPQR
Working
  1. Read the cells

P is in the cell of A; Q and R are in the cell of B

A home in a cell is nearer to that cell's site than to any other site.

  2. Check one

    \(PA=\sqrt{5}=2.24\); \(PB=\sqrt{40}=6.32\)

P is closer to A, as the diagram shows.

  3. Count

    2 homes go to B

Q and R are in the cell of B.

A house on an edge

Three fire stations are at \(A(2, 3)\), \(B(8, 3)\), \(C(5, 11)\), where the units are kilometres. A house is at \(H(5, 5)\). The house is on an edge of the Voronoi diagram. Find the distance from H to station A.

2468101224681012xyABCH
Working
  1. Distance to A

    \(HA=\sqrt{13}=3.61\)

Use the distance between two points.

  2. Distance to B

    \(HB=\sqrt{13}=3.61\)

The same, so H is on the edge between the cells of A and B.

  3. Distance to C

    \(HC=6\)

C is much further away. Only A and B matter here.

  4. What it means

A and B are equally near

The house can use either station. The model cannot choose between them.

Video walkthrough coming
Which weather station?

Three weather stations are at \(A(2, 2)\), \(B(9, 3)\), \(C(5, 9)\), where the units are kilometres. The rainfall last month was 14 mm at A, 22 mm at B and 17 mm at C. A farm at \(F(6, 5)\) uses the rainfall at its nearest station. Find the rainfall used for the farm.

2468101224681012xyABCF
Working
  1. Distances

    \(FA=5\); \(FB=\sqrt{13}=3.61\); \(FC=\sqrt{17}=4.12\)

Work out the distance from the farm to every station.

  2. The nearest

    B

B has the smallest distance. The farm is in the cell of B, as the diagram shows.

  3. Rainfall

    22 mm

    Use the rainfall at B.

Video walkthrough coming
Describing a situation

A town has 5 cafés. Describe how a Voronoi diagram models the situation. A new café then opens. How many cells does the new diagram have?

Working
  1. Sites

    The 5 cafés

    Each café is a site.

  2. Cells

    One cell for each café

A cell is every address that is closer to that café than to any other.

  3. A question it answers

Which café is nearest to this address?

Find the cell that contains the address.

  4. What it leaves out

Distance is in a straight line

Roads, rivers and walking routes are ignored.

  5. A new site

    6 sites, so 6 cells

The new café takes a cell from the cells around it, so the old cells get smaller.
