AHL 4.19

Components of a vector: along and perpendicular

Target: I can say what is meant by the component of a vector in a given direction. (+4 more)

By the end of this section

Key points

The two formulae

  • The component of \(\mathbf{a}\) in the direction of \(\mathbf{b}\) is \(\dfrac{\mathbf{a}\cdot\mathbf{b}}{|\mathbf{b}|}\), using the scalar product (dot product).
  • The component of \(\mathbf{a}\) perpendicular to \(\mathbf{b}\) is \(\dfrac{|\mathbf{a}\times\mathbf{b}|}{|\mathbf{b}|}\).
  • Remember: direction goes with the dot product (d for direction and dot). Perpendicular is not a helpful direction to dot with, so you cross.
  • These two results are not in the formula booklet.

Where they come from

  • Drop a perpendicular from the tip of \(\mathbf{a}\) onto the line of \(\mathbf{b}\). You get a right-angled triangle with hypotenuse \(|\mathbf{a}|\). Its two shorter sides are the two components.
  • From the triangle, the component in the direction of \(\mathbf{b}\) is \(|\mathbf{a}|\cos\theta\) and the perpendicular one is \(|\mathbf{a}|\sin\theta\).
  • Since \(\mathbf{a}\cdot\mathbf{b}=|\mathbf{a}||\mathbf{b}|\cos\theta\), dividing by \(|\mathbf{b}|\) gives the first formula. Likewise \(|\mathbf{a}\times\mathbf{b}|=|\mathbf{a}||\mathbf{b}|\sin\theta\) gives the second.

Checks and warnings

  • Divide by \(|\mathbf{b}|\), not \(|\mathbf{b}|^2\), and not \(|\mathbf{a}|\). The vector you divide by is the one you are going along.
  • The component in a direction can be negative: the vector points partly against that direction. The perpendicular component is a length, so it is never negative.
  • Check: the two components and \(|\mathbf{a}|\) are the sides of a right-angled triangle. For \(\mathbf{a}=3\mathbf{i}+4\mathbf{j}\) and \(\mathbf{b}=2\mathbf{i}\), the components are 3 and 4 and \(|\mathbf{a}|=5\).

Explore: the component of a along b and across b

Drag the tips of a and b. A perpendicular from the tip of a to the line of b makes a right-angled triangle. Its two short sides are the two components.

Component along b
Component across b

In the plane a × b has only a k part, so its length is the size of a₁b₂ − a₂b₁. Click a tip, then use the arrow keys to move it one unit.

Drag a tip to change a vector.

  1. Swing a past the perpendicular to b. What happens to the component along b? What does a negative component tell you?
  2. Put a along the line of b. What are the two components? Check with the working.
  3. Make b longer without changing its direction. What happens to the two components? Why does the formula divide by |b|?
  4. For any a and b, how are the two components and |a| connected? Check it on three different settings.

Worked examples

Problems like the ones in class. Pick one, try it, then open the working.
Component in a direction, 2D

Find the component of \(\mathbf{a}=4\mathbf{i} - 3\mathbf{j}\) in the direction of \(\mathbf{b}=2\mathbf{i} + 5\mathbf{j}\).

Working
  1. The scalar product

    \(\mathbf{a}\cdot\mathbf{b}=4\times2+(-3)\times5=-7\)

    Direction means dot product.

  2. The length of b

    \(|\mathbf{b}|=\sqrt{2^2+5^2}=\sqrt{29}\)

Divide by the length, not the length squared.

  3. Divide

    \(\dfrac{-7}{\sqrt{29}}=-1.30\)

The answer is negative. The vectors are more than \(90^\circ\) apart, so \(\mathbf{a}\) points partly against \(\mathbf{b}\).

A force along a path

A tractor pulls a log with a force \(\mathbf{F}=\begin{pmatrix}6\\-1\\3\end{pmatrix}\) kN. The direction along the track is \(\mathbf{d}=\begin{pmatrix}5\\2\\-2\end{pmatrix}\). Find the component of the force in the direction of the track.

Working
  1. Scalar product

    \(\mathbf{F}\cdot\mathbf{d}=6\times5+(-1)\times2+3\times(-2)=22\)

    Direction means dot.

  2. Length of d

    \(|\mathbf{d}|=\sqrt{25+4+4}=\sqrt{33}\)

The direction vector may be any length. Dividing by its length takes care of that.

  3. Component

    Component \(=\dfrac{\mathbf{F}\cdot\mathbf{d}}{|\mathbf{d}|}=\dfrac{22}{\sqrt{33}}=3.83\)

    Units: kN.

Component perpendicular to a vector

Find the component of \(\mathbf{a}=\begin{pmatrix}2\\-3\\5\end{pmatrix}\) perpendicular to \(\mathbf{b}=\begin{pmatrix}1\\4\\-2\end{pmatrix}\).

Working
  1. Perpendicular means cross

    \(\mathbf{a}\times\mathbf{b}=\begin{pmatrix}(-3)\times(-2)-5\times4\\ 5\times1-2\times(-2)\\ 2\times4-(-3)\times1\end{pmatrix}=\begin{pmatrix}-14\\9\\11\end{pmatrix}\)

    Direction: dot. Perpendicular: cross.

  2. Its magnitude

    \(|\mathbf{a}\times\mathbf{b}|=\sqrt{398}\)

  3. Divide by |b|

    Component \(=\dfrac{|\mathbf{a}\times\mathbf{b}|}{|\mathbf{b}|}=\dfrac{\sqrt{398}}{\sqrt{21}}=4.35\)

The perpendicular component is never negative.

A check with a right-angled triangle

Take \(\mathbf{a}=5\mathbf{i}+12\mathbf{j}\) and \(\mathbf{b}=3\mathbf{i}\). Find the component of \(\mathbf{a}\) perpendicular to \(\mathbf{b}\), then check that the two components and \(|\mathbf{a}|\) fit Pythagoras.

Working
  1. In the direction of b

    \(\dfrac{\mathbf{a}\cdot\mathbf{b}}{|\mathbf{b}|}=\dfrac{15}{3}=5\)

b is along the x-axis, so this is the x-part of a.

  2. Perpendicular to b

    \(\mathbf{a}\times\mathbf{b}=\begin{pmatrix}0\\0\\-36\end{pmatrix}\), so \(\dfrac{36}{3}=12\)

This is the y-part of a. The length of b cancels.

  3. Pythagoras

    \(5^2+12^2=169=13^2=|\mathbf{a}|^2\)

The two components are the two shorter sides of a right-angled triangle whose hypotenuse is \(|\mathbf{a}|\). Use this to check any answer.
