Maths beyond the curriculum.

Things our students do — and you can join in with — that go beyond the timetabled MYP and DP courses: a problem to puzzle over each week, competitions, enrichment, peer tutoring, and a frank look at maths anxiety.

Our competitions at a glance

FSJM — Fédération Suisse des Jeux Mathématiques

A Kangourou-style competition run by the Swiss federation of mathematical games. Heats are sat in school and finalists progress to a regional round. Open from Year 7 onwards.

Gauss Contest (Waterloo CEMC)

A 60-minute multiple-choice contest from the University of Waterloo (CEMC). Year 7 students sit Gauss 7 and Year 8 students sit Gauss 8. Strong Year-9s sometimes attempt Gauss 8 as a stretch.

ISMTF — International Schools Mathematics Teachers Foundation

Team-based mathematics competitions and professional-development workshops run by the ISMTF, an autonomous network of around 70 international schools across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, founded in Vienna in 1993. ISMTF runs three competitions a year — a Middle School round (up to age 14), a Junior round (up to age 16), and a Senior round (high school) — hosted by a different member school each year. The department typically enters the Senior round.

Swiss inter-schools competition

A friendly inter-school maths competition rotating between Swiss international schools. 2024–25 was hosted at another member school. 2025–26 will be in Verbier. 2026–27 will be hosted by the department.
