MYP → DP: choosing your mathematics course
There are four DP mathematics courses. The choice matters — it affects workload, assessment style, and which university degree programmes are accessible.
For students who enjoy applied mathematics with the GDC at hand. A good fit for futures in design, social sciences, business, and natural sciences where data literacy matters more than abstract proof.

Applications & Interpretation (AI)
Emphasises modelling, technology and interpretation of data. The GDC is always permitted. Assessment favours students who can set up a model, run it on a calculator and interpret the output in context. Well aligned with social sciences, design, business and data-oriented degrees.
Analysis & Approaches (AA)
Emphasises algebraic fluency, exact answers and formal reasoning. Paper 1 (no calculator) requires students to work entirely by hand. Well aligned with mathematics, physics, engineering and degrees where abstract proof is valued.
The level distinction: SL vs HL
SL and HL share a common core within each family. HL adds roughly 50% more content and the assessment is considerably more demanding. HL students typically spend significantly more time on mathematics per week outside class.
The key question is not "am I good enough for HL?" but "do I need HL for my intended degree, and am I willing to invest the time required?" The department's Year 11 teachers can advise on whether a student's current profile supports an HL choice.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing HL to "keep options open" without a realistic plan for managing the workload alongside five other DP subjects.
- Assuming AA HL is automatically better for university applications. For many programmes — including competitive ones in economics, computer science, and engineering — AI HL is explicitly accepted and sometimes preferred for its applied focus.
- Not checking specific entry requirements early. Some programmes specify a minimum grade in HL mathematics; others require AA specifically. Check the prospectus of target universities before finalising a choice.
