Shape and Measure

  1. 1. Identify and classify polygons by their properties (number of sides, regularity, convexity).
  2. 2. Convert metric units of length, mass, capacity and area.
  3. 3. Calculate the perimeter of rectangles, squares and triangles.
  4. 4. Calculate the area of rectangles, squares, triangles, parallelograms and trapezia.
  5. 5. Calculate the perimeter and area of rectilinear compound shapes.

Assessments

Area, perimeter and volume end-of-unit test

Criterion A 45 min

Written test on identifying polygons and calculating the perimeter, area and volume of standard shapes (rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, cuboids).

Tile-pattern investigation

Criterion B 60 min

Students build growing patterns of square tiles, count the perimeter at each stage, look for a pattern in how the perimeter grows, predict a general rule for the nth pattern, and test it on a larger case.
