7.7 Shape and Measure
Term 3
Polygons · Area · Perimeter · Volume
Learning Objectives
PrintShape and Measure
- 1. Identify and classify polygons by their properties (number of sides, regularity, convexity).
- 2. Convert metric units of length, mass, capacity and area.
- 3. Calculate the perimeter of rectangles, squares and triangles.
- 4. Calculate the area of rectangles, squares, triangles, parallelograms and trapezia.
- 5. Calculate the perimeter and area of rectilinear compound shapes.
Assessments
Area, perimeter and volume end-of-unit test
Criterion A
45 min
Written test on identifying polygons and calculating the perimeter, area and volume of standard shapes (rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, cuboids).
Tile-pattern investigation
Criterion B
60 min
Students build growing patterns of square tiles, count the perimeter at each stage, look for a pattern in how the perimeter grows, predict a general rule for the nth pattern, and test it on a larger case.
